Maintenance Tasks to Keep Your Roof in Excellent Shape

Because your roof is exposed to Mother Nature, it's important to keep up with some basic maintenance tasks to ensure it stays in the best condition possible. Twice per year, you'll want to inspect your roof. If you're not comfortable with getting up on your roof, then you can instead call in an experienced roofer who can conduct a thorough inspection and complete any needed maintenance tasks. At Accurate Roofing, our crew provides expertise with roof maintenance and repair. We'll make sure that your roof is fully capable of protecting your home's interior from the elements.

Important Types of Roof Maintenance

It's a good idea to clean out your gutters on a semiannual basis. If leaves and debris clog up your gutters, then water can spill over onto your roof, which may lead to rot. And if water starts pooling up on your roof, then there's a greater likelihood that it will find its way into the interior of your home, where it can cause water damage. By trimming trees and shrubs away from your gutters and roof, there will be less opportunity for organic matter to clog up your gutter system.

You'll also want to keep moss/algae under control. When moss/algae becomes particularly bad, it can actually have a negative effect on the roof's structural integrity. As you notice moss taking hold, you'll want to remove it. You can do this by first wetting down your roof and using a soft-bristle scrub brush to work it loose. You'll want to work gently so you don't risk causing any damage to shingles. And it's best not to use a pressure washer, which can damage roofing granules. Then you can apply a moss removal product, and follow it's directions accordingly to make sure you get all the moss off. Installing zinc strips can be helpful with preventing future moss growth.

Another important type of roof maintenance is to seal off any areas that critters might use to establish nests. Our roofing crew can make sure that your roofing components aren't alluring to the local wildlife.

Also, as part of a roof inspection, it's wise to inspect the metal stripping along skylights. This stripping is a common source of roof leaks so it should be kept in good condition. If the stripping appears damaged or excessively worn, it should be replaced before a leak forms.
